The Blue Zones diet is a plan that may promote longevity

Can the Blue Zones diet actually achieve lifespans of over 100 years? It may seem unbelievable yet the diet has been linked to five different regions of the world where there’s a high concentration of people surviving to be over a century old. Let’s take a look at the science behind all of this.

The five “Blue Zones” include Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California. Created by National Geographic Fellow, New York Times best selling author, and longevity expert Dan Buettner, the Blue Zones diet has been associated with people with superior cardiovascular, metabolic, and overall health results.

After conducting a study in these areas, Buettner determined that the diets and lifestyle behaviors in these different parts of the world are very similar. People from these regions have developed good habits such as daily walking, stress management, establishing a sense of purpose, and keeping relationships with family, friends, and the community.

The residents of the Blue Zones aren’t necessarily required to follow a healthy food plan, but there are specific Blue Zones foods that are factored into their healthy choices. Plants account for nearly all of what people in the Blue Zones regions eat; roughly 95 percent of their food consumption is plant-based.

A diet composed of plant-based foods can help decrease the risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar levels, and even prevent cancer. In a research of almost 130,000 participants, it was discovered that eating more plant protein rather than animal protein reduced the risk of heart disease. In addition, a meta-analysis of 16 studies found that consuming more Blue Zones foods such as fruits and vegetables reduced the risk of heart disease death.

The chart below showcases a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule to help anyone get situated with Blue Zones foods. Before beginning the Blue Zones diet or any other diet, make sure to consult with a doctor, who can prescribe the ideal eating plan for you based on your health needs.
